Teeth

What to do if a Rottweiler puppy or an adult Rottweiler has double teeth .

A healthy Rottweiler puppy has 38 deciduous (baby/primary) teeth and later on 42 adult teeth. It is the same in other breeds but the number in other breeds can vary.

The position of the teeth is very important.

The teeth must be in the correct order and in line and the upper and lower teeth must fit perfectly in a Rottweiler jaw.

The linear position is of great importance since dogs, especially Rottweilers, have strong bite pressure. Therefore, if teeth are not in correct order in line, the teeth can be broken during the bite.

There are a few types of bite according to the different position of upper and lower teeth.

During the scissor-bite the front teeth from the lower jaw touch the back side of the front teeth from the upper jaw and this is a normal teeth alignment. During the overbite the lower canine teeth are striking the roof of the mouth or palate and during the underbite one or both lower canine teeth are striking an upper incisor tooth or gum tissue and these teeth alignments are not good. Double tooth can also occur often and usually double teeth are P1 or canine teeth. In that case, a double P1 is not a problem but a canine is, and my suggestion would be to remove it.

The change from deciduous (primary) teeth to permanent teeth starts at the age of 4 months and lasts by the age of 6 or 7 months. At some moment during that period it can happen that you see two teeth together but there is no need for panic. The adult teeth push baby teeth but if you see both are there at the same time, you can just take some pliers and pull the baby tooth out.

Baby teeth have no roots and it is easy to take them out without any discomfort to the dog because the dog would not feel anything.

It is good to add a little extra calcium in that period of teeth changing.

My strong suggestion would be that if you see your dog biting something, especially in its kennel, remove the object from the kennel, because it can disturb the direction of the growing teeth and later on the adult teeth can be out of bite.

Also, the play involving tugging, biting or eating bones is not allowed till the end of the teeth changing process.
